Explore Rioja, Sherry and Castilla y León at Legado’s New Wine Tastings

Following the success of its vermouth tasting in July, Legado is launching a new series of guided Spanish wine tastings this autumn, giving guests the chance to explore some of the country’s best-known wine regions alongside tapas and pintxos in Shoreditch, London.

The monthly events will take place in the Taberna at Legado, the tapas and pintxos bar within chef Nieves Barragán Mohacho’s Michelin-starred Shoreditch restaurant. The series will run from September to November, with each one-hour tasting focusing on a different region or style of Spanish wine.

Each evening will feature five wines, accompanied by two or three tapas dishes selected to complement the tasting. With just 12 guests per session and communal tables throughout the Taberna, the format is designed to feel closer to a traditional Spanish wine bar than a formal wine course.

Rioja kicks off the series

The first tasting takes place on Thursday 17 September, with Head Sommelier Marcos leading an introduction to Rioja.

The session will cover the region’s history, principal grape varieties and winemaking traditions, including the oak-aged red wines for which Rioja is particularly well known. Guests will also explore some of the broader styles now being produced across the region.

Rioja was the first Spanish wine region to receive Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) status, the country’s highest classification for quality and provenance.

The tasting will feature five wines alongside tapas including Pan con Tomate, Ham Croquetas with Manchego and Gordal Olives with Orange and Oregano.

Sherry and Castilla y León follow

The programme continues in October with a tasting dedicated to Sherry, before moving to Castilla y León in November.

Together, the three sessions offer an introduction to very different parts of Spain’s wine culture, from Rioja’s internationally recognised reds to the distinctive fortified wines of Jerez and the varied styles emerging from Castilla y León.

The full programme is:

  • Rioja — Thursday 17 September
  • Sherry — Thursday 15 October
  • Castilla y León — Wednesday 11 November

Tickets cost £60 per person, including five wines and two to three tapas dishes.

Wine and tapas in the Taberna

The tastings will take place beneath the Taberna’s fluted arched ceiling, which draws on traditional Barcelona craftsmanship. The space operates as Legado’s tapas and pintxos bar from noon until late, with the tastings offering a more focused way to explore Spanish food and drink.

Legado opened as the latest restaurant from chef Nieves Barragán Mohacho, whose London restaurant Barrafina became known for its Spanish cooking and seafood. Legado was awarded its first Michelin star in February 2026.

The restaurant takes its name from the Spanish word for “legacy” and focuses on the country’s regional cooking, ingredients and culinary traditions.

For anyone looking to broaden their knowledge of Spanish wine without committing to a formal wine course, the new Legado series offers a more relaxed introduction and comes with plenty of tapas on the side.
